Fire officials are investigating the cause of a Friday afternoon structure fire that damaged a home in Waikoloa Village.

Responding to a 3:03 p.m. report, firefighters arrived at 68-3588 Makuahine St. to find heavy smoke and moderate flames emanating from the garage of a single-story family home, according to the Hawaii Fire Department. All of the residents had vacated prior to the arrival of firefighters.

Fire officials said the fire was confined to the garage and no neighboring homes were threatened. Firefighters extinguished the fire at 4:10 p.m.

No injuries were reported. Fire officials estimated damage to the 1,500-square-foot home at $100,000.

The American Red Cross said it responded to the fire and volunteers assisted the two people living there. Caseworkers will continue to follow up with the family to ensure their immediate needs are met, and to provide referrals to assist with their disaster recovery, the Red Cross said in a prepared statement.
